IFEA Pinnacle Awards 2014

The poster and the book with programme promoting the Misteria Paschalia Festival 2014 were awarded with silver statuettes in the categories of the Best Poster and the Best Printed Catalogue in the international competition IFEA Pinnacle Awards. The results of this year’s edition were announced on 29th September during the gala evening of the 59th Annual Convention & Expo in Kansas City (Missouri). Both designs – of the poster and the programme book were created by the Homework Studio (Joanna Górska and Jerzy Skakun). The book’s typesetting was the responsibility of Magdalena Pieczka, its proof – Danuta Ambrożewicz, and the translation was the work of Cara Thorton and Michał Szostało. The coordinators representing Krakow Festival Office were Anna Górska and Daria Szwed.

This year, among the competitors, there were cultural institutions from such countries as the Netherlands, India, Singapore, Slovenia or South Korea.

Krakow Festival Office was awarded by IFEA for the fourth time, which is a large honour for us - says Izabela Helbin, the Director of Krakow Festival Office. This year we received two awards for the projects connected with this year’s Misteria Paschalia Festival, which is a great merit, given the number of competitors all over the world. The publications connected with the Misteria Paschalia Festival have always been classy and elegant, so the reward is a clear signal for us that the connection of simplicity and beauty in our projects is the right direction to follow.

Let us remember that the International Festivals & Events Association – IFEA associates more than three thousand members and is the oldest institution of this type in the world. Every year it awards the world’s best cultural events; appreciating, among others, the professionalism of their preparation, creativity, advertisement campaign and published materials. The jurors in the IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle Awards competition are world’s distinguished authorities in the area of graphic design, promotion and public relations, as well as radio-and-television, printed and Internet media as well as event planning and management.

The 6th Grolsch ArtBoom Festival was nominated for the Radio Krakow Brand. ArtBoom in Nowa Huta seems to be the least obvious event organized by the Krakow Festival Office, the least celebrity-oriented, the least spectacular. But it is also much needed - we read in the justification of the nomination. The other rivals in the competition were: The Fiddler on the Roof along with the Summer Krakow Opera Festival, the celebrations connected with Kolberg’s Year at the Ethnographic Museum, Beata Guczalska’s book entitled Aktorstwo polskie generacje [Polish Acting Generations] published by the National Academy of Theatre Arts in Krakow (PWST), Stare papiery Nowe obrazy [Old Papers New Pictures] by Jarosław Modzelewski in Zderzak, Papieże, Krzysztof Niemczyk. Sytuacjonista, pisarz, malarz [The Popes, Krzysztof Niemczyk. Situationist, Writer, Painter] at the MOCAK Museum and Psss... SPUŚĆ POWIETRZE STARY [Psss... Let Go, Old Man] / a review of performances of the Swinarski season – at the Old Theatre.

The PRESS trade magazine has prepared an album entitled 101 eventów, które musisz znać [101 Events You Have to Know], i.e. a subjective selection of events shaping the image of brands and places. We are pleased to inform that this prestigious list includes as many as five events organised by the Krakow Festival Office: the Misteria Paschalia Festival, the Sacrum Profanum Festival, the Grolsch ArtBoom Festival, the FMF – Film Music Festival in Krakow, and the Opera Rara series.

The richly illustrated book presents interesting and original events that build or enhance the image of brands, promote specific products, and increase interest in these products. Each description includes a note with basic information about the event: the idea behind it, its venue and time, and entities responsible for its organisation.

Jury comprised of journalists representing the Krakow media awarded the Krakow Festival Office for two readership promotion campaigns: Drugie Życie Książki [The Second Life of a Book] and Wirtualna Biblioteka Wydawców [Publishers’ Virtual Library].

In their substantiation for awarding Drugie Życie Książki, which is organised in cooperation with the Bookeriada Internet portal, the jury pinpointed that means by which readers are reached, a variety of accompanying events and interesting guest form the world of literature are the key factors. A simple idea of book exchange has been successfully held at various venues all over Krakow. Also Wirtualna Biblioteka Wydawców has become an important summer event in Krakow: readers downloaded over 10,000 e-books in two-months’ time. Twenty publishing houses from Krakow promoted modern technologies in reading at sixty stops of the public transportation network. Wirtualna Biblioteka includes several dozen of the best releases from the past several months: belles-letters, biographies, reportages, poetry, books for children and teenagers. As Joanna Targoń emphasised, giving her vote to Krakow Festival Office, that “coming up with a simple, unpretentious and beneficial idea, is the most difficult.”

Resume’s fifth edition, the Krakow Film Music Festival’s fifth edition and... the fifth victory in a row of the latter in the former. Although last year’s edition of Transatlantyk in Poznań was a strong opponent and John William’s invariably fascinates with his presence in the music world, it was hard to supersede Krakow, even when financial problems appeared and the programme was not fixed until the very last moment. We might be one-track-minded, but the FMF truly has been one of the most interesting events devoted to music and film, not only in Poland. As simple as that – as we read in the summary of the year 2012 prepared by reviewers from Polish Internet portals devoted to film music and published by MuzykaFilmowa.pl.

Cultural High 2012

The final concert of the jubilee edition of the Sacrum Profanum Festival has just received the title of Cultural High in the Event category (in readers’ voting) in the annual competition organised by Gazeta Wyborcza.

This was the 5th edition of the Cultural Highs awards. As the organisers say, these are awards for those who are not afraid of challenges but looking for new ways in art and doing something really exceptional. The nomination of the Polish Icons concert was justified as follows: ‘Several years ago, the Sacrum Profanum was already named an event that sets new directions on the musical map of Europe. The Polish Icons project is yet another example of such actions, and, at the same time, a harbinger of changes in the event.’

Festivals organised by the Krakow Festival Office and materials promoting Krakow events were once again appreciated by the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA). The booklet by Łukasz Markiewicz, published to promote an accompanying event of the Misteria Paschalia Festival, the premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's St. Luke Passion directed by Grzegorz Jarzyna, received the golden Pinnacle Award. But this was not the only award for the Krakow Festival Office! The poster designed by Piotrek BDSN Okrasa for the Grolsch ArtBoom Festival carried off the bronze in the best promotional poster category.

Let us recall that the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA) brings together over three thousand members and is the oldest institution of its kind in the world. Every year, it awards the best cultural events in the world, taking e.g. their professional organisation, creativity, promotional campaign, and printed materials into account. The Krakow Festival Office received the prestigious main award at the Tenerefire International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ) for the organisation of the Film Music Festival in Krakow (FMF). The award was presented during the official gala held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Universal Pictures film studio, a crowning event of this year's 6th edition of FIMUCITÉ. This is the coping stone of the nearly four years of collaboration between the FMF and the Tenerife festival. FIMUCITÉ is held in Santa Cruz on the Tenerife, and its artistic director, Diego Navarro, an acclaimed film music composer and conductor, is a dear friend of the FMF.

The FIMUCITÉ AWARD is a distinction granted to composers, institutions, and promoters of film music for outstanding merits in the dissemination and development of knowledge about the genre and their contribution to the growth of this important sector of the audiovisual industry.
